For Andrew Barta and the folks at Tech 21, "modeiing" is a dirty word. As one of the few companies that strongly believes in the quality of analog technology, they focus on quality emulation of traditional amplifiers rather than digital modeling, which they consider sterile. As the company behind the original SansAmp amplifier emulators, they have recently shifted to pedals designed to emulate specific amplifiers, both guitar and bass. The Tech 21 VT Bass DI is their attempt to capture the classic tones of the Ampeg SVT bass amplifiers.
The VT Bass DI has no shortage of tonal adjustment. Packed into its relatively small space are controls for Level, Blend, Mid, Character, Drive, Low, and High. While most of these controls will likely seem familiar to most users, the Character control is specific to the Tech 21 Character series and modifies the basic voicing of the pedal affording it a great deal of tonal flexibility. For the ultimate in versatility, the pedal offers three outputs: Parallel, -10dB 1/4", and -20dB XLR. Small push-button controls activate "Bite" and defeat the built-in speaker emulation if needed.
