Pedal Info

It's safe to say that compression is one of the few effects that is a "must have" effect for most bass players. Many bass amplifiers even include built-in compression for this very reason. Still, pedal compressors are still the most popular choice for most bassists. While many compressors are marketed as suitable for both guitar and bass, a few dedicated bass guitar compressors are available, including the DigiTech XBS Bass Squeeze Compressor Pedal.

Digitech has a few pedals dedicated solely to effects, so it's no surprise that they would offer a compressor, given this effect's popularity. For their bass compressor, Digitech partnered with the world-renowned compressor experts dbx in order to offer their widely-regarded Overeasy compression technology, included in dbx's own world-class compressors. Essentially dbx's version of "soft knee" compression, which is a gradual application of the compressor to the signal, resulting in a much more natural sound.

The Digitech XBX Bass Squeeze offers four controls, three of which are not standard fare on most compression-type effects. There's a level control, which is common enough. But there are also X-Over (crossover), Lo Band, and Hi Band controls. Put simply, the X-Over control dictates which frequencies are controlled by the Lo and Hi Band knobs. At its minimum setting, the X-Over control is at 100Hz and and its highest setting it is at 3kHz. While perhaps confusing at first, this allows much finer EQ control.

Finally, the Bass Squeeze features two discreet outputs (one to amp, one to mixer) and includes a 9v battery. An optional power supply is not included.

User Reviews

User reviews are overall positive. Many players especially like the dbx Overeasy compression technology in a stomp pedal. While a few players are initially put off by the controls, which are different from most compressional pedals, they eventually appreciate the pedal's tonal variety. Many players comment that the pedal improves the quality of their sound and simply leave it on all the time. The pedal also receives praise for its durability.

There are a few complaints, though. Some users find the unit noisy, especially with active basses. A few users recommend highly that you try this pedal through your own rig before you commit to it. For a compressor, it also consumes batteries rapidly and should be used with a dedicated power supply or pedalboard power supply.
