Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus

Pedal Info

Few effects pedal manufacturers have the well-earned reputation that Boss does. Since the 1970s, they (and their parent company Roland) have been producing tools for guitarists and bassists that are widely considered some of the best in the business. While most of their products are aimed at guitar players, they do offer some bass pedals that are worth checking out, including the Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus.

Bass chorus pedals have proven popular because they are a relatively easy way to fatten up one's sound. The problem with most chorus pedals is that that they're voiced for guitar players. The Boss CEB-3 focuses its chorusing on the higher frequencies and unaffecting the lower frequencies which would result in a muddied sound, an undesirable result.

The Boss chorus offers controls for effects level, low filter, as well as traditional chorus controls of rate and depth.

User Reviews

Most user reviews of the Boss CEB-3 bass chorus have been overwhelmingly positive. Most users are pleased with the pedal's focus on high-end frequencies and report that the pedal's construction will hold up to the most stringent stage conditions. Players are also pleased with the thickness that the pedal adds to their sound, particularly in situations where there is a single guitar player, since the bass player has to fill for rhythm guitar parts often.

Like all Boss pedals, the CEB-3 uses a buffered bypass system, and most players seem to be satisfied and don't report much "tone suck." Most players use the pedal to add spice to solos or fill sections rather than leaving it on continuously, and they report that it does the job admirably.

Probably the most praised feature is that the pedal doesn't muddy up the lower frequencies. As far as complaints, a few players think that the chorus range isn't "extreme" enough. On the whole, however, complaints about the tonal range, construction, and price are extremely low.
